National Fire Protection Association data indicates that fire crews were called to roughly 174,000 car fires last year and that 445 of those resulted in a fatality. In Oklahoma, of all deaths that were a result of fires, approximately 17% involved vehicles, which is over 5% higher than the national average. Corrective Action in Auto Accidents
KOCO News 5 OKC reported that a woman was traveling with her child on County Road 2420 when her car veered off the road for approximately 300 feet. Highway Patrol says the woman took no corrective action as she hit five T-posts before her vehicle burst into flames, killing both her and the child. Read the rest »
Hail in Oklahoma!
Benjamin Jurkovich was traveling through Ada, Oklahoma, when he unexpectedly encountered a hailstorm. Many of the falling hailstones were the size of tennis balls. His vehicle suffered a cracked windshield and severe body damage. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests vehicles annually to determine their crashworthiness. The IIHS is a non-profit organization that impartially assesses the year’s new vehicles. Their overall goal is to reduce injuries and deaths that result from vehicle collisions. They publish and rate good performers as a Top Safety Pick+, which are the best, or as a The Top Safety Pick, those rated as good within their size categories. Generally, there is a correlation between the size and weight of a vehicle and the level of passenger protection that the car can provide, as larger models perform better in crash testing. Top Safety Picks According to IIHS – Small Cars
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests how vehicles perform in crashes and how well they protect their occupants.
The vehicles that are the best performers are Top Safety Picks. These are vehicles determined to be good in five crash tests: small front overlap, moderate front overlap, front, side, and strength of roof and head restraints. A vehicle that measures exceptionally is classified as a Top Safety Pick+. The models are placed into categories based on the type of vehicle and their size.
