truck-6887887Like it or not, automobiles and other smaller vehicles have to share the roadways with tractor trailers. Sharing the road with these larger vehicles is dangerous for automobile drivers can be dangerous because of the vast size and weight difference between cars and semis. Let’s look at a few statistics:

  • 18 wheel tractor trailers weigh an average of 80,000 pounds
  • The average weight of an automobile is 5,000 pounds
  • The stop time of a tractor trailer is 40 times greater than that of a car
  • Nine percent of tractor trailer collisions result in a fatality

Another reason 18 wheelers can be dangerous is because they are comprised of two different units: the tractor and the trailer it tows. “Jackknife” accidents occur when the tractor brakes, or slows, and the trailer, due to its weight, skids and swings forward. When this happens, the semi driver has no control over the trailer.

Due to the hazards related to tractor trailers, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has established strict rules regarding 18 wheelers and their drivers. Drivers require special licenses and training, and must undergo health and background checks. In addition, the FMCSA limits the amount of hours a driver can drive without a rest break.

While these regulations may make sharing the road with big rigs somewhat safer, there is still a good deal of danger. If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident with a tractor trailer, you may be entitled to compensation for the following, or more:

  • Pain and suffering
  • Medical bills
  • Loss of income
  • Property loss
  • Rehabilitation costs

Tractor trailer companies and their drivers carry extensive insurance policies because of the increased risk they pose on the roads.
