It is illegal to leave the scene of an Oklahoma car accident when someone has been injured or killed. According to Oklahoma Statute 10-102.1, “The driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting in the death of any person shall immediately stop such vehicle at the scene of such accident or as close thereto as possible but shall then forthwith return to and in every event shall remain at the scene of the accident.” Drivers who fail to stop to avoid detection or prosecution will likely face felony charges.
The family of a deceased hit-and-run accident victim would be well advised to immediately contact a skilled attorney. It may be possible to hold the at-fault driver accountable for the collision. A knowledgeable car accident wrongful death attorney in Oklahoma can even help a family pursue compensation when the authorities do not arrest the at-fault driver. Every case is different, but financial compensation should be available for lost future wages, funeral expenses, pain and suffering and other related damages.
